The Door was my final project in my Video Editing I class. I took the freedom of this project as an opportunity to attempt different in-camera effects to create a more eerie final product.
The concept of this short film was built around liminal spaces and lucid dreaming. The main character, played by Kaitlyn Nusz, struggles with lucid nightmares that transport her to a menacing realm that she must escape every night. Finding no solace in her psychiatrist, played by Max Moore, and having little success forcing herself to stay awake, she must find her way out of her worst nightmare yet.
The screenplay was entirely original, and it was my first project at UConn that allowed me to work on writing dialogue. My main challenge with this project, however, was working with limited space that was meant to seem never-ending.
This project was filmed entirely on an iPhone, so creating zoom effects, such as the Vertigo Effect that I included during the running sequence, and capturing smooth transitions was particularly difficult. I was able to use some of the effects in Premiere Pro to improve the quality of these effects. Additionally, through more effects and color correcting, I created the dreamy quality of the mysterious dream realm.
The Door stands as a testament to overcoming creative hurdles and pushing the boundaries of filmmaking within the constraints of limited resources, delivering an immersive exploration of liminality and the enigmatic realm of dreams.
